What's an Urban Land Army?

An Urban Land Army is a group of city people that gets together to grow food, learn some solid skills, and bring vegetables to the people.

Here’s how it works:
Here on this site - and in real-life - you create your very own Urban Land Army of family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, or anyone else you consider "up for the job.” Your group then works on fun projects like Bucket Brigades, converting lawns to vegetable gardens, building worm compost bins, finding vacant land in your neighborhood to garden, throwing applesauce-making parties, anything you fancy. Team up with other armies here, or just check out what they're up to!

Over at the main website - www.urbanlandarmy.com - we provide the how-to information you need to work on your projects and to learn some skills, like ripping out your lawn, planning and planting your first garden, or canning things up for winter. We also have some supplies for sale like “built for work” Urban Land Army T-shirts, City Seed Packs, Land Survey Kits, and posters for your room.

To set up your Army, simply click on the 'Groups' tab above, then 'Add a Group' and fill in the blanks with a name, a photo. Then, follow the steps to add other information like what you're interested in, what you're working on, and what you need help with. You can invite people to join your Army, post nifty links, and start discussions on topics that interest you.

Armies are organized by geographical area, so if you want to see if there is already one set up in your part of town, just click on the 'Groups' tab. You can join this Army or set up another one!

Do your own thing
We know that group work isn't for everyone. So, you can be a free agent here on the site and work on your own projects at home!

Explore the site!
Some fun things to do here include:
* Posting photos, videos, and events
* Starting discussions (via the 'Forum' tab)
* Inviting others to join ('Invite' tab)
* Checking out what other armies are doing ('Groups' tab)

Ready? Let's get moving!

One Man's Opinion on a Sat. in September...

...the cost of living...literally...can send a head spinning. I try to break it down into what is immediately in front of me and work through how community members can unite to solve their short term problems without losing sight of long term outlooks.

Big Ag., and their confederates, simply keep flailing away at our global resource dissipation. This caught my attention last night...but just for a short minute:… Continue

Grow My Own Wheat!

I just found out that I do have enough space in my side yard to plant my own wheat!! What a great plan, I have learned how to grow wheat seed, to winnow and purchased a wheat mill. I also have measured the yard and learned how many square feet this project can be alloted, my difficulty.....SOD. A few options do exist, using the services of a landscaper to remove the sod or even renting a sod cutter. However both of those options make the whole process cost ineffective. One of…

...the Business of hunger...

....today's Wall Street Journal smiled from the concierge desk on a rare out of town trip. Glaring at my nose was a cover story analyzing what's been the hottest topic in our household the past 24 hours: Global warm weather (did I say something? I was talking about this summer!) has, among other victims, decimated the wheat crop in Russia. Heat approaching 110 F. on the steppes cooked and sufficated the eastern breadbasket via wildfires and...simply inadequate water to sustain what Vladimir…

One of the many reasons...

...to take a heads-up attitude towards self reliance popped up on my computer screen this morning. I ran across this news article during my morning net check.

Wheat Hits 23-Month High as Drought Shrivels Russian Crop

Wheat rose to a 23-month high in Chicago as Russia, the world’s

third-biggest…

Outside Looking In...

Several years ago, I testified in front of Tacoma City Council...in a successful effort to ward off banishment of small-scale livestock. At the last minute, my plea to seperate our passion from the cats n' dogs was approved..and hens, at least, were allowed.

Now, I seem to be running (wait for it...) a fowl of rural..county...zoned n' grandfathered for generations regs which have made my feathered housecats a potential issue. How this happened can only be pegged on the greedy…
